What type of waves are sound waves and do they need a medium?
Longitudinal waves are the movement of particles that are parallel to the motion of energy. Sound waves move through the air so they are longitudinal waves but, they are also mechanical waves because a mechanical wave forms when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. Reproduction of the energy depends on interactions between the particles that make up the medium needed in sound waves.
